Monocular are simple telescopes which are only half of a pair of binoculars. If you love bird watching, then a pair of binoculars with a wide field of view and a fully multicoated optics may just fit your needs.
How does one choose a binocular? Modern binoculars come with a variety of coatings to protect the lenses and improve the brightness of the observed image. But the optical surfaces still need protection from scratches and other damage.
A monocular was a perfect device to locate and identify riders from far off, and to determine from their banners or colour whether they are friend or foe. The coating reduces glare and protects your eyes from UV rays, and increases the definition and clarity of an object. Phase correction is a coating on the lenses that increases the sharpness, contrast and color saturation.
Waterproof construction eliminates potential damage due to wet conditions. You don't have to worry about wearing any gloves, which sometimes hampers the focus usage. Usually only magnification below 5X works well for night binoculars.
You will also need to buy an atlas of the sky suited for astronomy, and a guide. Keep a pair in your discount luggage, at the ready to give you a close up view of wherever you're going.
